With a new year, comes the new wellness trends. I’m sure you have already started to notice the commercials, pop-ups, spam, etc. “Buy our new, all improved formula”, “Change your life with this groundbreaking product”, blah, blah, blah! All of it may feel a little overwhelming, so we’ve compiled a few highlights to try and simplify the onslaught of wellness trends of 2018 . And as always, it’s important to check with your nutritionist or doctor about anything your unsure about using.
- Moringa – Turmeric and it’s anti-inflammatory powers may have owned 2017, but in 2018 it’s all about moringa. North American healthy food companies have discovered this super-green from south of the equator, and it’s being touted as an even more powerful inflammation fighter. It has twice the protein of spinach and three times as much iron, says nutritionist Kimberly Snyder. According to the journal Ecology of Food and Nutrition, it has impressive amounts of calcium, potassium, and vitamin A.
- Skin Care for the Modern World – These days our skin has to battle numerous factors like UV rays, pollution, harsh ingredients and even blue light from laptops. The beauty world is stepping up by using ingredients like lipids, ceramides, adaptogens, and even live bacteria to help fortify your skin’s natural functioning. Watch for launches from companies like Marie Veronique, Biossance, Allies of Skin, and microbiome-protecting Mother Dirt. These companies are anticipating the various environmental stressors your skin might endure each day, and the imbalances they could cause.
- In-Home Fitness Studios – Can digital fitness innovations really work as well as trainers and group fitness studios? “Everyone from marquee-name fitness gurus and spin-and-stream innovator Peloton to mega-brands like Equinox and Amazon are racing to answer that question with a big, sweaty yes.”, according to wellandgood.com. Online classes streamed to your devices are becoming popular, which isn’t surprising considering they can really increase the reach beyond studios alone with some of the hottest fitness talent.
- Healthy Pet Food – Eating healthy isn’t just for humans anymore. More and more people are starting to pay attention to what’s in there pets’ food too. In 2016, the US natural pet food sales generated $8.2 billion (a quarter of the total US pet food market), and it’s projected to grow another 9.5 percent between now and 2021. It seems that the days of mystery meat, additives, preservatives, artificial flavors, and much, much worse, are on their way out to make room for organic proteins, veggies and non-GMO ingredients in pet food.
- Brain Boosting Supplements – Nootropics are Silicon Valley-born supplements popularized by biohackers. While the name may sound silly, they are getting serious attention for helping reduce brain fog and stress levels. They’re about to reach a wider audience hoping to fine-tune their minds and to help keep up with our ever-busier lives (a few sci-fi films come to mind). “Many of the promising cognitive performance enhancers feature amino acids, like stress-reducing l-theanine (used by companies TruBrain and HVMN) and the stimulant and “happiness-hormone booster” phenylethylamine(Awakened Alchemy). Other ingredients may include “supercharged” brain-protecting omega 3s (featured in HVMN’s Nootrobox set), uber-honey (Beekeeper’s Naturals), and even chewable coffee.” These may be the way to go when meditation doesn’t seem to get the job done.
- Putting more Om in Home – A big trend set to grow this year is making your home a healthier space. Interior design is being inspired more and more by spas, yoga and meditation studios. Popular items include crystals, aromatherapy diffusers and salt lamps. A sure sign of these wellness trends growing is finding most readily available in the big-box stores. Even indoor plants have risen in popularity by 200 percent in the last year alone, according to Pinterest. Says Elizabeth Kohn, the interior designer-founder of The Cristalline: “People want to feel good in their homes, just as much as the clothes that they wear or the food they put in their bodies.”
- High-Tech Sleep Science – We’ve been hearing for awhile now how important it is to power-down our devices hours before bed to help get a good night’s sleep. This year we’ll see wellness trends that will actually encourage bringing technology into the bedroom via digitized beds. These next-gen mattresses now have the capability to provide the optimal environment with temperature controls, sharing data about your REM stats, and creating solutions to help you wake up naturally. Products such as Smart mattresses from Serta Simmons Bedding offshoots Tomorrow Sleep and Eight Sleep can even wake you up using a smart alarm that knows when you’re in a stage of light sleep. There are also sleep trackers, too, that work with your existing mattress (like S+ by ResMed, Emfit, and Sleeptracker). It seems that these days, even our sleep is being given an upgrade.
- Kombucha Is Going Mainstream – This fermented tea mixture was once fairly obscure but has been gaining mainstream popularity in recent years. According to Square, kombucha sales are up by more than 12 times from three years ago, and one research firm says the category is already worth an annual $600 million (and counting). With this, more companies are getting in on the act and producing small, craft batches of this gut-healthy drink. Some regional brewers include Brooklyn’s Pilot, Lion Heart of Portland, Big Easy Bucha’s Voodoo Brew, which incorporates Southern flavors such as chicory and vanilla coffee and in Pennsylvania, Sole makes an oak-aged blend of blackberries, blueberries, hibiscus, and ginger. Whether you go for kombucha for the taste or help benefits, your sure to see brands popping up everywhere this year.
- Destinations To Help You Unplug & Unwind – In recent times, it’s unheard of to go without your phone. We work, date, socialize, game, basically do everything from our handheld devices, which is why it is more important than ever to disconnect. Phone-free social clubs, no-WiFi cafes, and other places for IRL connection are on the rise. There are even restaurants offering discounts if you’re willing to “power-down”. This is all in an attempt to help people re-connect and build a stronger sense of community. Wellandgood.com suggests destinations like “Everywhere from Camp Grounded in Mendocino, CA, whose motto is ‘disconnect to reconnect’ to Villa Stephanie in Baden-Baden, Germany (the famous spa town)—which blocks all WiFi signals from your room by embedding copper plates in the walls to prevent your boss’ emails from reaching you on vacation—to the Mandarin Hotel Las Vegas’ ‘digital wellness escape” (check your phones at the front desk, please). Want to go where no cell towers can reach you? A new glamping startup called Hipcamp can find you an off-the-grid place, a la Airbnb.” “People feel more lonely, more stressed, and anxious than ever,” says Folk Rebellion founder Jess Davis. “The technology that was meant to connect us and simplify our lives, when overused, in fact, causes the opposite reaction.”
