Keep things fresh with some of these top trending workouts.

HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training)

HIIT’s help you burn those calories fast by alternating quick bursts of high-intensity exercise with short rest periods. It can be found in all types of workouts, from Pilates to CrossFit and bootcamp classes.

Health.com suggests trying a high-intensity interval training workout yourself, spend 20 to 30 minutes total combining repeated shorts bursts of work with short break periods, like 45 seconds of burpees with 15 seconds of rest followed by 45 seconds of squats.

Self-Defense Classes

Victoria’s Secret models like Gigi Hadid have popularized boxing, which has become one of the hottest fitness trends of the last few years. This trend is expected to shift to skill-based self-defense classes that also raise your heart rate.

“In the last few years we’ve been seeing a lot of female empowerment through strength training,” says Pete McCall, M.S., certified personal trainer. “The natural progression of that is seeing more women getting into some kind of martial arts…They’re lifting weights, and feeling strong and powerful. Now they want to do something with it.” McCall also adds, self-defense is a practical skill to have.

Circuit Training

While similar to HIIT, circuit training is described as a lower-intensity option when compared to its non-stop work counterpart. Typically, 10 exercises are chosen and completed one after another in a circuit with rest between each exercise. Then, the circuit is repeated. This workout is a good answer for those beginners who find high-intensity interval training intimidating. Circuit training can be done on your own or at gyms with more specialized equipment.

The New Yoga

Non-traditional approaches to yoga are here, and they’re taking fitness to the next level. Box + Flow workout studio gives New Yorkers the chance to blend boxing with yoga, the WOOM center provides a multi-sensory (smell, touch, sound) yoga workout, and there are now Drake-themed hip-hop yoga classes in Los Angeles. Locally, there are breweries offering “Work For Your Beer” classes that offer group yoga classes where your hard work can be rewarded by a local brew.

Mobility & Flexibility Rollers

Stretching before and after a workout has become common practice for some time now, but foam rollers offer more deep-tissue massage action. These tools have become popular in the last few years and are known to improve circulation and relieve muscle tension. Foam rollers come in many styles, including smooth or raised-bump cylinders. To test out this trendy piece of fitness equipment, try these foam roller exercises.

Exercise Apps

Fitness smartphone apps have become popular (most of us have probably tried a few) and are projected to continue trending. They range from meal planning help or programs that let you work out in your own home, meaning that there’s probably an app out there for you. As with wearables, these apps have been questioned for their accuracy, but younger gym-goers and fitness lovers don’t seem to mind. In time though, as with most technology, these apps will become more accurate and usage is expected to rise.

Social Workouts

Social workout options—like group exercise classes, SELF’s run club, and bRUNch running membership program—are gaining popularity. While people start prioritizing fitness more in the new year, we’re most likely to see them take off.

“Stuff like this makes fitness more of a social outing,” remarks Pete McCall. “That’s a good thing. There are only so many hours in the day, so why not combine fitness with social fun time?” McCall also says “If the social aspect is what gets you exercising, that’s a big thing.”
