Summer Skin Care Tips
As temps have been heating up, you’ve probably been showing a little more skin. Did you know that your skin is your body’s largest organ? It is also the fastest growing and needs your attention, especially in the summer. Learn some “Summer Skin Care Tips” and give your skin some love this season.
Skin Cleanse:
This seems like a no-brainer but are you cleansing enough or maybe too much?
Why we do it: With hot and humid air of summer, your skin may be extra oily. And most likely, you sweat more during the summer compared to other seasons. If this is the case, you certainly won’t want to leave all that excess oil and sweat on your skin day after day.
When do to it: Twice a day. First thing in the morning to wash away oil and sweat that can build up on your skin’s surface overnight. Then, before bed, remove makeup and cleanse your skin again. Tip: Your hair conditioner can clog pores, so wash your body after rinsing your hair.
Exfoliate Skin:
This means to wash or rub (a part of the body) with a granular substance and may already be a part of your skin treatment routine.
Why we do it: Because exfoliation removes dead, dull skin debris to prevent clogged pores and improve hydration when using toners and moisturizers.
When do to it: The morning is preferrable. Exfoliate Skin before applying toner, moisturizer and make-up to help it last longer throughout the day.
H2O Is Your Friend:
We know … you’re tired of being reminded to drink plenty of water but that’s because it’s so important!
Why we do it: Hydration is vital for your health inside and out. Water helps maintain crucial moisture balance of the body and skin and assists in detoxification.
When to do it: All day, every day! The suggested amount is eight 8-oz. Glasses of filtered water daily (more if you have been sweating excessively). Tip: If you drink caffeinated beverages, you should triple the amount of water you drink!
Apply Sunscreen … And Reapply … And Then Reapply Again
As you probably already know, SPF should be a staple in your summer skin care routine—no matter what skin type or skin care concerns you may have.
Why we do it: Overexposure to the sun can lead to premature aging and even skin cancer in some cases. It is not enough to just apply sunscreen. You must apply enough and apply frequently. Studies have shown that most people do not apply nearly as much daylight protection as they should.
When to do it: Re-apply every two hours. SPF 30 is recommended. You should be using approximately a teaspoon for your face and about as much as would fill a shot glass for your body. Tip: If you’re looking for that sun-kissed glow, there are plenty of great self-tanners and bronzers available these days. With the right self-tanner, you won’t have to worry about turning as orange as an Oompa Loompa!
Soothe & Repair Sun-Damaged Skin
So, you didn’t follow the above skin care tips and now your skin has been damaged from overexposure to the sun and it’s harmful UV rays. Sounds like it’s time for some skin repair.
Why we do it: UV light causes photoaging in the form of brown spots, coarse skin and wrinkles, whether you have burned your skin or not. Damage from sunlight can affect healthy cell growth, and stimulation of collagen destructing enzymes. Super-soothing botanicals and cooling gels can help prevent peeling and reduce redness and inflammation. Age-fighting ingredients, such as retinoids, hydroxy acids and peptides, can help undo any damage that may occur, and to further protect it from the aging effects of UV.
When to do it: Apply cooling balms generously over-exposed skin, preferably at the first sight of a pink glow. Use a moisturizer with SPF and age-fighting ingredients daily. Tip: One blistering sunburn can double your risk of melanoma! Remember to get a yearly skin exam by a dermatologist and perform a self-examination once a month, looking for early warning signs of carcinomas and malignant melanoma. Also, be on the lookout for a new growth or any skin change.
