Andropause: What is it?

The word “andropause” sounds a bit familiar, doesn’t it? We frequently hear about menopause, but today we’ll be talking about the male equivalent: Andropause. This refers to the symptoms men experience once their testosterone levels start to drop with age. Andropause usually begins around 40, but can vary from person to person depending on other factors. No worries, Andropause can be treated using HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and by making some simple lifestyle changes!

Symptoms of Andropause

The symptoms of Andropause generally relate to lack of energy and poor mood. If you’re going through Andropause, you might experience: loss of sex drive, lack of energy, decreased physical performance, weight gain, erecticle dysfunction, depression and lack of motivation. Don’t worry, we’re here to give you the rundown on how to combat these symptoms!

Andropause Treatment

The most recommended treatment for symptoms of Andropause is HRT, where testosterone levels are replaced in the blood. This way, your testosterone levels aren’t quite as low, and a lot of these symptoms start to ease up. However, if you’re not willing to try HRT, what you’ll need is some simple lifestyle changes.

  • Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol lowers testosterone levels and over time this can also impact your sex drive.
  • Make sure your diet is rich in zinc, calcium, vitamin D, and omega-3’s. Stick to the protein and cut out the excess sugars.
  • Stick to a consistent sleep schedule. Testosterone is generally produced during sleep, so make sure you’re getting enough good quality sleep.
  • Exercise! Weight training especially will promote muscle growth and thus increase testosterone production.
