It’s one thing to get fit on your own but we would all like for our whole family to be healthy together. But how to drag the kids away from the video games or your partner from the game on TV? It may not be feasible to join a gym together or enact a structured workout routine for everyone but there are some ways to get the family active without it even seeming like work. Here’s just a few ideas to exercise as a family and get your family moving and have a little fun at the same time.
- Slip workouts into everyday activities. Have your child walk in the grocery store instead of riding in the cart and take the stairs when possible. You could even drive just short of your child’s school and walk a small portion of the way.
- Go for pre- or post-dinner walks. By making it part of your routine, it becomes a little easier for your family. You can even make a game out of it by making a list of things to look for, such as “cat in a window”, “red bird in a tree”, etc.
- Make TV commercials into fitness breaks. Come up with fun names for exercise like “blast-off squats” or “princess push-ups”. Each member of the family could also take turns being “the leader” and everyone has to follow their movements.
- Crank the tunes and have a dance party. Choose a night, say Friday night, move some furniture out of the way, turn up the music and boogie down. Dance together or take turns with a flashlight for spotlight dances.
- Get everyone working in the yard. Summertime can be little warm for yard work, so bust out the hose to wash the car. In the fall, make a game out of who can rake the biggest pile of leaves to jump into. Wintertime brings snow to scoop out of the way, where the piles make for good snowball fights and the spring is great for planting beautiful or tasty items in the yard.
- Walk the dog. New research from North American Association on the Study of Obesity shows that dog-owners had more fun losing weight and were able to keep it off longer than those who don’t have a dog. (Bonus: A tired dog can lead to a happy owner) If you don’t own a pooch, lure the kids out in the hopes of coming across some.
- Have a weekly game night. Choose a night that works for everyone and turn a deck of cards into silly movement cards, for example “crab walking” or “kangaroo jumping”. You can also purchase exercise cards from FitDeck.com.
If you do you it right, your family won’t even realize that they’re exercising and you’ll all have a bit of fun while you’re at it. Also, check out our programs which can be customized for any member of the family and call for a free consultation.
